Bay View Rolling Mill : The Reason We Exist
Description:
Photograph of Illinois Steel Company, Milwaukee,1936-1938.
Blast furnaces looking South.

What's the story?:
The mill was not the only employer in Bay View by the early 1900s, meaning Bay View was no longer a "company town." Puddling also became obsolete as mechanization took over. U.S. Steel put more resources into their plant in Gary, Indiana, than the plant in Bay View, and the mill closed in 1929, right as the Great Depression was about to begin.
